ONE FRAME FRIDAY

tree

the best?Christmas?gift of all is the presence of a happy family all wrapped up with one another.

so this one time we celebrated christmas with a poinsettia and a pine scented candle? yeah, we failed. we didn?t get a christmas tree this year, how unfortunate. seriously, i have zero good excuses and a million bad ones. life just sort of took over and before we knew it, december 26th was on the calendar and we had no pine needles to vacuum up. drew got overly?busy with wine season and the fact that we have two shiny new cars that aren?t equipped to travel a large needled object left us celebrating around a little pretty poinsettia. the ornaments are still in their box waiting to be hung, the lights sit in a pile in the office, and i am left feeling like a tad bit of a failure of a wife.?

i would love to blame it on the fact that our new little boy pup likes to think that christmas trees are a spot to mark his scent, or the fact that i was over the top busy getting things in line for 2013, or that drew doesn?t get home until it is dark out but let?s be real? enough people posted photos on facebook to make me feel like we had a lovely one, without all of the work. christmas really isn?t about chopping down a tree and covering it with tinsel and lights. it isn?t about pretty packages or glittered bows, or last minute shopping, or crazy wish lists. ?it?s about reflecting on the things you have and sharing your?blessings with those less fortunate. it is about stuffing your bellies full, taking naps, and sipping coffee with your grandma.?it?s about being where your heart is and celebrating the fact that a tiny baby was born in a stable. maybe if the wise men had really been so wise, they would have brought him blankets and not incense? it?s about celebrating this little life who changed the world by holding a lit candle and singing old hymns. ?

i have already forgotten all the gifts that i received, but what i do recall is far more important. it was worth every long hour in the car to be home with our families over the last five days. to fall asleep on the couch, sip some wine, play some board games, fill the house with family, and celebrate. we didn?t celebrate presents, we celebrated the gift of life. the joys, trials, triumphs, pains, small victories, promotions, dreams, growth? it was all celebrated oh so well, and that is the reason of the season. so mother nature, you can thank me for sparing one of your fir trees? our christmas was perfect even without following a silly tradition of a pretty tree with lights and tinsel and maybe a little dog pee.?
