New Year's Recipes | HGTV Gardens

new year's menu

You?ve probably heard that black-eyed peas are said to bring luck on New Year?s Day, but did you know that pork, greens and ring-shaped bread also promise good fortune? Here we?ve pulled together a menu of recipes for ringing in the New Year, all based on tradition and most featuring garden-fresh veggies, fruits and herbs:

  • Hoppin? John Salad.?Red bell peppers and fresh parsley accent this?traditional black-eyed pea dish to make 2013 lucky. Or mix those black-eyed peas with corn, peppers, onions and pimentos and serve up with corn chips in this Black-Eyed Pea Dip.
  • Cuban Roasted Pork Leg. Pork is another traditional New Year food that?s thought to represent good fortune. This recipe incorporates fresh oregano and a bright splash of citrus fruit.
  • Collard greens. The leaves of greens represent folded money ? and the promise of wealth in the year to come ? in New Year?s tradition. Paula Deen?s authentic Southern recipe makes good use of that leftover Christmas ham.
  • Three Kings Bread.?In Latin America, this New Year?s treat is traditionally served with a little doll, a coin, or another prize tucked inside. The circular nature of the bread represents wholeness or the completion of a year and the beginning of the next. ?This recipe is big on candied fruit, ?surprise inside? optional.
