Has Twitter done with mobile ads what Google and Facebook can?t?

It?s no secret that mobile advertising is the holy grail that virtually every major digital player is trying to find, but no one seems to have cracked the code just yet. Facebook has admitted that while it has almost half a billion users on mobile devices, it still isn?t sure whether its mobile business is working or not, and Google hasn?t blown anyone away with its results so far either. According to some reports, however, one company that is having some success is Twitter ? which now sees a majority of its advertising revenue coming from mobile. Is there something about Twitter that makes it more likely to succeed at mobile advertising than its larger competitors?

The fact that Twitter?s mobile advertising accounts for more revenue than its website (which it has said before) is surprising in part because the company has only been offering mobile ads ? including promoted tweets, promoted trends and other formats ? since earlier this year, while advertising on the website version of the service has been available for much longer. But a majority of Twitter?s usage (about 60 percent or so, according to the company) also comes from mobile devices and apps, so it makes sense that this would become a big part of the advertising model as well.

A million people engaging with an ad in four days

A?Wall Street Journal?story shows that Twitter may be succeeding at something that both Google and Facebook continue to struggle with, and also that it actually has a growing business model that might justify its multibillion-dollar market value. It should also be noted that the piece focuses primarily on the experience of a single company: namely, Chinese-food chain P.F. Chang?s.

But what is interesting is that the company doesn?t just say that the ads it placed were effective ? an executive with the chain says the results were ?staggering.? Chang?s paid $25,000 to promote its offerings to people who were searching for or interested in terms like ?Chinese New Year,? and targeted both mobile and desktop users. In just four days, about one million people clicked on a promoted tweet from the chain, retweeted it or otherwise interacted with it ? and about 70 percent of those people did so from mobile devices.

The Chinese-food chain isn?t the only one the Journal mentions: software company CloudOn Inc. also says it has had success with a Twitter ad campaign, generating close to 10,000 downloads of its iPad software. The company said it saw 2.5 downloads for every 100 ad impressions ? which it said was three times the download rate of an ad on Twitter.com, and much better than other advertising services (although the story doesn?t say which ones it was comparing this to).

Twitter CEO Dick Costolo

Anecdotal data from two small companies isn?t much evidence to go on when it comes to Twitter?s likelihood of success with mobile ads, but then the company hasn?t been in the business very long either. And more than one advertiser is going to perk up when they see that a retailer had over a million people click on or otherwise engage with a promoted tweet in just four days of a campaign ? anyway you look at it, that?s a pretty impressive result. One of the things that?s interesting about Chang?s experience is that other campaigns didn?t work as well. Was there something about the Chinese New Year campaign that made it work better?

Could Twitter be a superior mobile ad medium?

As the Chang?s executive mentions in the Journal story, it?s possible that having a message that is targeted to a very specific event is better than a broad sales pitch for a service. One thing Twitter has going for it is that large numbers of people see it as a mobile information network with real-time content about interesting topics ? both news and entertainment related. If a tweet like Chang?s is targeted to an event people are reading about in their Twitter stream, it makes sense that it would get a lot of engagement, and that is clearly what Twitter is counting on.

It is still early days in the mobile advertising market, with mobile ads making up only about 5 percent of all ad spending. But as former internet analyst Mary Meeker noted in a recent presentation, the gap between the amount of time people spend on mobile devices vs. the amount of money advertisers spend there has to close eventually, and that is a massive opportunity ? internet users spend about 10 percent of their time on their mobile devices. And both Google and Facebook have their sights set on dominating that market.

Could Twitter as a mobile advertising medium be fundamentally superior to Google or Facebook? The service is arguably far more efficient as a mobile content-consumption platform than anything that the other two web giants have been able to come up with. And Twitter also has the potential to be better at targeting around specific events or locations than either Google or Facebook, which could give it an edge as the market grows. One thing seems obvious: the mobile advertising race is just starting to heat up, and the early signs are that Twitter could turn out to be a strong contender.

(AP) ? Congress emphatically approved legislation Friday preserving jobs on transportation projects from coast to coast and avoiding interest rate increases on new loans to millions of college students, giving lawmakers campaign-season bragging rights on what may be their biggest economic achievement before the November elections.

The bill sent for President Barack Obama's signature enables just over $100 billion to be spent on highway, mass transit and other transportation programs over the next two years, projects that would have expired Saturday without congressional action. It also ends a bare-knuckle political battle over student loans that raged since spring, a proxy fight over which party was best helping voters muddle through the economic downturn.

Obama signed a one-week temporary measure Friday evening, permitting the highway and loan programs to continue until the full legislation reaches his desk.

Under the bill, interest rates of 3.4 percent for subsidized Stafford loans for undergraduates will continue for another year, instead of doubling for new loans beginning on Sunday as scheduled by a law passed five years ago to save money.

Had the measure failed, interest rates would have mushroomed to 6.8 percent for 7.4 million students expected to get the loans over the coming year, adding an extra $1,000 to the average cost of each loan and antagonizing students ? and their parents ? four months from Election Day.

The Democratic-led Senate sent the measure to Obama by a 74-19 vote, just minutes after the Republican-run House approved it 373-52. The unusual display of harmony, in a bitterly partisan year, signaled lawmakers' eagerness to claim credit for providing transportation jobs, to avert higher costs for students and their families and to avoid being embarrassed had the effort run aground.

This year has seen the two parties mostly drive each other's plans for tax breaks and economic revival into a stalemate, although lawmakers have enacted bills retaining the Social Security payroll tax cut for a year and renewing a government agency that promotes U.S. exports.

"It's important for Congress to act, not just talk about problems we have but to get things done," said Rep. John Mica, R-Fla., a chief House author of the transportation measure.

"We have a bill that will boost this economy," said Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., a sponsor who said the measure would create or save 2.8 million jobs. "We have a bill that is supported by conservatives and liberals, progressives and moderates. I think this is a great day."

All the no votes were cast by Republicans.

The compromise ended up sprinkled with unrelated nuggets dealing with Asian carp, roll-your-own tobacco and federal timber aid. But its most significant provisions dealt with transportation and student aid.

The final transportation measure dropped a provision ? which had drawn an Obama veto threat ? that would have forced government approval of the controversial Keystone XL oil pipeline from Canada to the Texas coast. But it contains curbs on environmental reviews of transportation projects. Republicans sought those curbs in hopes of cutting construction time almost in half.

The bill consolidates federal transportation programs and gives states more flexibility in spending money from Washington. It also contains an array of safety initiatives including requirements aimed at enhancing bus safety. And it makes advocates of bike and pedestrian paths compete for money with other transportation projects.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said the administration was glad Congress acted "before middle class families pay the price for inaction." He said Obama will keep pressing for approval of more of his job-creating proposals from last year, to hire teachers, police officers and firefighters and for tax credits to companies that hire new workers.

Most of the overall measure was financed by extending federal taxes on gasoline and diesel fuel for two more years. Those levies, unchanged for nearly two decades, are 18.4 cents a gallon for gasoline and 24.4 cents for diesel and now fall well short of fully financing highway programs, which they were designed to do.

About $20 billion would be raised over the next decade by reducing tax deductions for companies' pension contributions and increasing the fees they pay to federally insure their pension plans. In return, a formula was changed to, in effect, let companies apportion less money for their pensions and to provide less year-to-year variation in those amounts.

To raise other revenue, the government will start charging interest on subsidized Stafford loans no more than six years after undergraduates begin their studies. Today no interest is charged until after graduation, no matter how long that takes.

In addition, a loophole was tightened to make it harder for businesses with roll-your-own cigarette machines to classify the tobacco they sell as pipe tobacco ? which is taxed at a lower rate than cigarette tobacco. The change is expected to raise nearly $100 million.

Some federal workers would be allowed to work part-time as they gradually retire, saving the government money because the workers would receive only partial salaries and retirement annuities.

As often happens with bills that are certain to win the president's signature, the measure became a catch-all for other unrelated provisions.

One would order the government to accelerate work on a plan for preventing Asian carp, which devour other species, from entering the Great Lakes from the Mississippi River. It drew opposition from Sen. Dan Coats, R-Ind., and some other lawmakers arguing that blocking the fish could interfere with shipping, but the Senate turned their objections aside.

Federal flood insurance programs that protect 5.6 million households and businesses were extended, allowing higher premiums and limiting subsidies for vacation homes to help address a shortfall in the program caused by claims from 2005's Hurricane Katrina.

The measure also steers 80 percent out of billions in Clean Water Act penalties paid by BP and others for the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion to the five Gulf states whose beaches and waters were soiled by the disaster. The money would have otherwise gone to federal coffers.

Federal timber subsidies worth $346 million would be distributed for another year to rural counties, while other funds would be steered to rural school districts. The bill also eases restrictions that force most American food aid to be shipped abroad on U.S.-flagged vessels.

New method reveals atmosphere on 'Hot Jupiter' (+video)

Using a ground-based telescope to probe exoplanet atmospheres, which were visible only?when illuminated by stars, scientists say they hope to study much cooler planets.

The atmospheres of alien planets can now be probed even if they are not illuminated by stars directly behind them, astronomers say.

A new method used to scan the atmosphere of a distant "hot Jupiter" world could eventually reveal insights about many distant alien planets ? including, perhaps, whether or not they support life, the researchers added.

"If we could detect gases like oxygen, these could point to biological activity," study co-author Ignas Snellen, an astronomer at Leiden University in the Netherlands, told SPACE.com.

A new look at exoplanet atmospheres

Scientists have analyzed the atmospheres of exoplanets before, but only when those worlds passed in front of their parent stars, much like Venus did during its recent transit of the sun.

The change in the light of a star as it streams through an exoplanet's atmosphere can reveal details about the air's composition. Different molecules absorb light in distinct ways, resulting in patterns known as spectra that allow scientists to identify what they are. [Gallery: The Strangest Alien Planets]

Now scientists have for the first time analyzed the atmosphere of an exoplanet that, like most such alien worlds, does not pass between its star and Earth.

The planet in question is Tau Bo?tis b, one of the first exoplanets to be discovered back in 1996 and one of the nearest exoplanets to Earth known, at about 51 light-years away. The world is a "hot Jupiter" ? a gas giant orbiting very close to its parent star.

The exoplanet's parent star, Tau Bo?tis, is easily visible with the naked eye, but the planet is not. Up to now, Tau Bo?tis b was only detectable through its gravitational pull on the star.

An international team caught the faint infrared glow from Tau Bo?tis b using the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope (VLT).

"We were able to study the spectrum of the system in much more detail than has been possible before," study lead author Matteo Brogi, of Leiden Observatory in the Netherlands, said in a statement. "Only about 0.01 percent of the light we see comes from the planet, and the rest from the star, so this was not easy."

Archaeologists working at the site of La Corona in Guatemala have discovered a 1,300-year-old-year Maya text that provides only the second known reference to the so-called "end date" of the Maya calendar, December 21, 2012. The discovery, one of the most significant hieroglyphic finds in decades, was announced today at the National Palace in Guatemala.

"This text talks about ancient political history rather than prophecy," says Marcello A. Canuto, director of Tulane's Middle American Research Institute and co-director of the excavations at La Corona.

Since 2008, Canuto and Toms Barrientos of the Universidad del Valle de Guatemala have directed excavations at La Corona, a site previously ravaged by looters.

"Last year, we realized that looters of a particular building had discarded some carved stones because they were too eroded to sell on the antiquities black market," said Barrientos, "so we knew they found something important, but we also thought they might have missed something."

What Canuto and Barrientos found was the longest text ever discovered in Guatemala. Carved on staircase steps, it records 200 years of La Corona history, states David Stuart, director of the Mesoamerica Center at The University of Texas at Austin, who was part of a 1997 expedition that first explored the site.

While deciphering these new finds in May, Stuart recognized the 2012 reference on a stairway block bearing 56 delicately carved hieroglyphs. It commemorated a royal visit to La Corona in AD 696 by the most powerful Maya ruler of that time, Yuknoom Yich'aak K'ahk' of Calakmul, only a few months after his defeat by long-standing rival Tikal in AD 695. Thought by scholars to have been killed in this battle, this ruler was visiting allies and allaying their fears after his defeat.

"This was a time of great political turmoil in the Maya region and this king felt compelled to allude to a larger cycle of time that happens to end in 2012," says Stuart.

So, rather than prophesy, the 2012 reference places this king's troubled reign and accomplishments into a larger cosmological framework.

"In times of crisis, the ancient Maya used their calendar to promote continuity and stability rather than predict apocalypse," says Canuto.

Don't be ashamed of being 'loan-ly': Take loans for your car ...

The buyers who having an emergency to purchase a car but do not have that much of financial condition, auto title loans makes their wishes possible. Taking loans for your car makes car owning easy for the people who have few savings.

Before taking the auto title loans, there are certain procedures you have to go through. First you have to sign contracts where the terms of that loan will be stated. These terms include the APR (annual percentage rate, that is the rate of interest you pay). The schedule of your repayment and the associated fees (or any penalties, if any) may apply. Read out all the terms and conditions before signing the pares. You may get deceived by the fine prints on the papers if you do not concentrate.

The amount of money you plan to put down, the auto loan qualification is effectively determined by your credit score and income. There may be a condition that you have great credit score, but you do not have good monthly or annual income. In that case lenders turn down to offer. whereas if your got a poor credit score, you will get a loan but you have to pay a larger rate of interest.

All kinds of auto title loans are available. Starting from cent percentage of financing loans,ow APR loans, bad credit loans to same day loans. Think of your options and find what fits the best for you.

You have to be familiar with the operating style of an American pawn shop. The brokers lend loans for your car to you for a fixed period of time. With that they hold a valuable asset from you as collateral. When you repay the cash with the interests you gets your asset back. If you somehow fail to do to so, may lose that.

Mostly the pawn transactions during getting the loans for your car are made through jewelry, electronic items, fire weapons and other valuable items (antique pieces) as collateral. But the car title is also used. Do not worry, you will keep your car as long as you are repaying the loan.

Besides auto title loans, there is another term called ?Leasing?. Always try to be clear about the leasing. The term ?Leasing? is nothing but another form of borrowing cash to finance a car. But the thing that makes it different is if you take the ownership of the car, you offer it (or something else) in terms of security to the lender. Here, lease finance notices the leasing company taking the ownership. Thereafter for a specified period of time, they will let you use the car under contract.

The Ultimate Retirement Plan for the Self-Employed - Typepad

A Solo 401(k) Plan is designed for the self-employed and offers powerful features that are not found in conventional IRA or 401(k) plans.? It is a flexible and tax efficient retirement solution that will open up a world of investment opportunity with unlimited potential.? You can use your retirement account to invest in Real Estate, Notes, Tax Deeds, Tax Liens and much more.?

The Solo 401(k) plan is unique and becoming very popular because it is designed explicitly for small business owners. It?s a tax efficient and cost effective plan that offers all the benefits of a Self-Directed IRA plan but includes additional benefits.

Checkbook Control without Custodian Fees:

In a Solo 401(k) Plan, you serve as trustee of the Plan which gives you ?checkbook control? over the Plan?s assets.? Making an investment with a Solo 401(k) Plan is as easy as writing a check, meaning that ?you do not have to hire a bank or trust company to serve as trustee. All assets of the Solo 401(k) trust are under the sole authority of the Solo 401(k) participant, eliminating the expenses and delays associated with an IRA custodian and enabling you to act quickly when the right investment opportunity presents itself.

High Contribution Limits:

While an IRA only allows a $5,000/yr. contribution limit ($6,000 for those over age 50), the Solo 401(k) annual contribution limits are significantly higher, up to $55,500/yr. That?s nearly 10 times more compared to an IRA!? Also, if your spouse generates compensation from the business, he or she can make contributions to the Plan.

Flexibility:

While you have the option to shelter a large portion of your income, contributions to a Solo 401(k) plan are completely discretionary. You have the option of contributing as much as legally possible, but you also have the option of reducing or even suspending plan contributions if necessary. In other words, you have the ability to make contributions to your Solo 401(k) Plan but are not required to do so.

Roth Sub-Account:

With an IRAs, those who earn high incomes are disallowed from contributing to a Roth IRA.? The Solo 401(k) plan contains a built-in Roth Sub-Account which gives you the ability to make Roth type contributions (after tax) significantly greater than with an IRA, without any income restrictions (for 2012 Roth Solo 401(k) maximum contribution is $22,500). ??This allows you to grow your investments tax-free!

Loan Feature:

While an IRA offers no participant loan feature, the Solo 401(k) allows participants to borrow up to $50,000 or 50% of their account value (whichever is less). This offers a Solo 401(k) Plan participant the ability to access up to $50,000 for any purpose, including paying personal debt, funding a business, or investing in real estate.

Exempt from UDFI:

When an IRA buys real estate that is leveraged with mortgage financing, it creates Unrelated Debt Financed Income (?UDFI?) ? a type of Unrelated Business Taxable Income (also known as ?UBTI?) in which taxes must be paid. The UBTI tax is approximately 35%. ?With a Solo 401(k) plan, you can use leverage without being subject to the UDFI rules and UBTI tax. This exemption provides significant tax advantages for using a Solo 401(k) Plan versus an IRA to purchase leveraged real estate.

Cost Effective Administration:

Generally, Solo 401(k) plans are easy to operate. There is no annual filing requirement unless your Solo 401(k) plan exceeds $250,000 in assets, in which case you will need to file a short information return with the IRS (Form 5500-EZ).

O'Reilly Automotive shares plummet as it cuts Q2 forecast ...

Pdf Wed 1:52 pm by Erin Sugar

() cut its second quarter guidance Wednesday on account of lower sales in June, with shares plunging 16.5 per cent to $80.55 following the announcement.

The automotive specialty retailer reduced its earnings per share outlook for the second quarter to the lower end of its previously announced forecast of $1.13 to $1.17 per share.

This is well below analyst expectations of $1.19 per share.

O?Reilly also decreased its comparable store sales growth forecast from 3 to 5 per cent to between 2 to 2.5 per cent.

"Our previously announced second quarter comparable store sales guidance reflected our slow start to the quarter in April due, we believed, to the shift of some business into the first quarter as a result of the early spring weather in many of our markets, and we expected sales trends would stabilize as the quarter progressed," said O?Reilly?s co-president, Greg Henlsee.

"We saw improved comparable store sales results for the month of May; however, comparable store sales in June were below our expectations."

The company will release second quarter results on July 25.

O?Reilly Automotive is a retailer of automotive parts, tools, supplies, equipment and accessories in the United States. It currently operates 3,809 stores in 39 states.

PFT: Jones-Drew thinks rushing mark 'doable'

118998553_crop_650x440Getty Images

It?s officially time to break out the Deux Deux Deuxs.

ESPN has announced that Chris Berman and Trent Dilfer will call the second game of the season-opening Monday Night Football doubleheader, when the Raiders host the Chargers.

The official announcement includes a ?podcast? from Berman, who likely still thinks that term is a reference to the film Invasion of the Body Snatchers, in which he explains how the decision came to be.

?Our president John Skipper, our executive V.P. of production John Wildhack, we were together, and midway through an interesting evening they said, ?We?d like you to call the second Monday night game,?? Berman says.

?I went, ?Now, wow.? There?s something I never really thought about.?? Of course, I?ve thought about calling NFL games my whole life, but given what I do and Sunday duties, the normal ones, and it?s Week One of the season and you get your hands full and we?re all excited and we?re trying to do our best in the studio, etc.? I didn?t see it coming.

?I said, ?I gotta give you guys credit.? So, you understand I haven?t called a football game in a while, although I?ve called many baseball games and U.S. Open golf, etc., etc.? I was really surprised and excited about hearing it, to be honest with you.? Really excited.? It?s nice to be surprised after 32 years, it really is.?

This explanation implies that Berman had done no lobbying whatsoever for the gig.? Which some people will believe, and plenty of people won?t.

To get ready for the regular-season assignment, Berman and Dilfer will handle the Titans-Cardinals game on August 23.

Per ESPN, Berman will host Sunday NFL Countdown on Week One, then fly to Oakland to prepare for the Monday night game.? There?s no specific word yet on who will replace Berman for The Blitz, Berman?s SportsCenter-embedded review of game highlights with Tom Jackson.

And that?s perhaps the real news.? For the first time in a quarter-century, someone other than Berman will get the opportunity to narrate the extended highlights packages from the games of the Sunday that was.? To give up those reins, Berman must have really wanted to get in to the booth.

UPDATE 10:50 a.m. ET:? ESPN spokesman Bill Hofheimer says that the host of The Blitz has not yet been determined.? With Berman absent, Suzy Kolber will host Monday Night Countdown from Bristol.

Scientists find new primitive mineral in meteorite

ScienceDaily (June 26, 2012) ? In 1969, an exploding fireball tore through the sky over Mexico, scattering thousands of pieces of meteorite across the state of Chihuahua. More than 40 years later, the Allende meteorite is still serving the scientific community as a rich source of information about the early stages of our solar system's evolution. Recently, scientists from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) discovered a new mineral embedded in the space rock -- one they believe to be among the oldest minerals formed in the solar system.

Dubbed panguite, the new titanium oxide is named after Pan Gu, the giant from ancient Chinese mythology who established the world by separating yin from yang to create the earth and the sky. The mineral and the mineral name have been approved by the International Mineralogical Association's Commission on New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification. A paper outlining the discovery and the properties of this new mineral will be published in the July issue of the journal American Mineralogist, and is available online now.

"Panguite is an especially exciting discovery since it is not only a new mineral, but also a material previously unknown to science," says Chi Ma, a senior scientist and director of the Geological and Planetary Sciences division's Analytical Facility at Caltech and corresponding author on the paper.

The Allende meteorite is the largest carbonaceous chondrite -- a diverse class of primitive meteorites -- ever found on our planet and is considered by many the best-studied meteorite in history. As a result of an ongoing nanomineralogy investigation of primitive meteorites -- which Ma has been leading since 2007 -- nine new minerals, including panguite, have been found in the Allende meteorite. Some of those new finds include the minerals allendeite, hexamolybdenum, tistarite, and kangite. Nanomineralogy looks at tiny particles of minerals and the minuscule features within those minerals.

"The intensive studies of objects in this meteorite have had a tremendous influence on current thinking about processes, timing, and chemistry in the primitive solar nebula and small planetary bodies," says coauthor George Rossman, the Eleanor and John R. McMillan Professor of Mineralogy at Caltech.

Panguite was observed first under a scanning electron microscope in an ultra-refractory inclusion embedded in the meteorite. Refractory inclusions are among the first solid objects formed in our solar system, dating back to before the formation of Earth and the other planets. "Refractory" refers to the fact that these inclusions contain minerals that are stable at high temperatures and in extreme environments, which attests to their likely formation as primitive, high-temperature liquids produced by the solar nebula.

According to Ma, studies of panguite and other newly discovered refractory minerals are continuing in an effort to learn more about the conditions under which they formed and subsequently evolved. "Such investigations are essential to understand the origins of our solar system," he says.

Additional authors on the American Mineralogist paper, "Panguite, (Ti4+,Sc,Al,Mg,Zr,Ca)1.8O3, a new ultra-refractory titania mineral from the Allende meteorite: Synchrotron micro-diffraction and EBSD," are John R. Beckett, senior research scientist at Caltech; Oliver Tschauner from the University of Nevada-Las Vegas; and Wenjun Liu from the Argonne National Laboratory. The study was supported through grants from the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Department of Energy, and NASA's Office of Space Science.

Lead poisoning stymies condor recovery

Iconic species may not stand on its own without complete shift to nontoxic ammunition

Web edition : 5:00 pm

The California condor?s return to flying free in the wild after a close brush with extinction may be an illusory recovery.

The hundred-plus condors soaring over California swallow so much lead shot as they scavenge carcasses that the population can?t sustain itself without steady medical care and continual resupply from captive populations, says toxicologist Myra Finkelstein of the University of California, Santa Cruz. She and colleagues describe analyses of lead in blood and feathers June 25 in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

About 30 percent of blood samples collected annually from free-flying condors in California show lead concentrations high enough to affect the birds? physiology, Finkelstein and her colleagues report. Each year about 20 percent of the state?s monitored birds flunk their lead test badly enough to need detox.

This grim paper supplies the data to confirm the toll of lead ammunition on condors in the wild, which conservation biologists have warned about for years, says Jeff Walters of Virginia Tech in Blacksburg. Regional or species-specific regulations do restrict ammunition in California and Arizona, the two states where condors live. But those rules don?t seem to be solving the problem, Walters says.

Without a politically difficult nationwide ban on lead ammunition, he says, California condors ?exist in the wild only due to costly, extensive human intervention, essentially in an outdoor-zoo state.?

The world population of free-flying California condors had dropped to 22 birds in 1982 when biologists stepped in with an ambitious plan to save them. Even though no one had bred this condor species in captivity, biologists eventually trapped all the remaining wild birds to try breeding them. The effort succeeded well enough for biologists to start releasing condors back into the wild, albeit with plenty of monitoring and help. The same threats that eroded the species to begin with are still a menace, however.

Making a wild landscape safe for condors requires strict reductions in lead exposure, Finkelstein warns. Even if only 0.5 percent of carcasses carry lead tidbits, a condor still has an 85 percent to 98 percent chance per decade of flapping down to eat one. That kind of risk matters for birds that, if healthy, live 60 to 70 years.

?I certainly would not want to see us let go of the condor ? it's an iconic species of tremendous cultural value ? but it's hard to justify a continued release effort until the lead issue is addressed,? says conservation biologist David Wilcove of Princeton University. ?It might well be better to call off the releases until regulators develop the backbone to do something about lead.?

Walters predicts that a lead ban will eventually happen. ?There is no doubt in my mind that use of lead ammunition is resulting in exposure of human children to harmful effects of lead,? he says. ?We just haven?t documented the extent of this or its impact yet.? Eventually this will go the way of lead toys.? The condors may not be unusual in their reliance on people for apparent comebacks, says Mike Scott of the University of Idaho, who has written about what he calls ?conservation-reliant species.? In 2010, he and his colleagues estimated that 84 percent of species listed for federal protection will need ongoing support to persist in the wild.
