Saving Mackenzie Rivers

Saving Mackenzie Rivers

In the year 2062, humans live in a wasteland under strict policy of the dictator. Recently, a gang of robots from the past with artificial intelligence and no idea what happened has been spotted, and they might hold the key to a better life.

Brenda Stokes Killed 10-Year-Old Jade Morris Before Attacking Co-Worker With Razor Blades: Police

LAS VEGAS -- Police suspect that a casino worker killed a 10-year-girl before going to a Las Vegas resort and allegedly slashing the face of a co-worker with razor blades.

The search for Jade Morris ended Friday afternoon when officials confirmed that it was her body that was found a day earlier in an undeveloped housing tract.

The Clark County coroner's office said she died of multiple stab wounds,

Jade was last seen Dec. 21 with family friend Brenda Stokes Wilson, who picked her up to go Christmas shopping.

Wilson, 50, returned the car she had borrowed for the outing to a friend two hours later. Jade never came back. Investigators later found blood on the driver's door and steering wheel of the 2007 Saab sedan.

Later that night, Wilson was wrestled to the ground with razors in each hand after allegedly slashing the face of a female co-worker at the Bellagio casino.

A judge raised her bail to $60,000 from $600,000 Friday morning after she was identified as the prime suspect in the child's killing.

"It's no secret the defendant is the suspect in the murder of 10-year-old Jade Morris," prosecutor Robert Daskas told Senior Clark County District Court Judge Joseph Bonaventure at the hearing.

Later Friday, Las Vegas police homicide Capt. Chris Jones said investigators were still moving forward.

"As soon as we get all the evidence in that we need, we'll book her on the murder charges," he said.

Wilson has been jailed since the 21st on felony battery with a weapon, burglary and mayhem charges that could get her decades in prison.

Police said she offered no help in the search for the missing girl. Murder and kidnapping charges could get her life in prison without parole or the death penalty.

On Thursday, Las Vegas police responding to a 911 call found a girl's body in unkempt brush near palm trees in a small traffic circle about 10 miles from the downtown Las Vegas outlet mall where Stokes was to have taken the girl shopping.

On Friday evening, Jones called the slaying "unfathomable."

"Even having our jobs, we still can't wrap our heads around this," he said. "A lot of people think that just because of our positions we can understand it, but we can't."

In court Friday morning, Wilson stood flanked by eight police officers as her lawyer, Tony Liker, clutching a Bible and a copy of the charging documents, asked the judge to postpone arraignment until Wednesday to give him time to meet with Wilson.

Wilson, who had been identified by police and prosecutors as Brenda Stokes, told the judge Friday that her full name was Brenda Stokes Wilson.

Jade's father, Philip Morris, was removed from court Wednesday by armed court officers after shouting questions about his daughter's whereabouts to Wilson. He did not attend Friday's hearing.

The two dated for several years, and Jade had a long and trusting relationship with Wilson, according to the girl's grandfather, Philip Tucker.

Tucker said Philip Morris lived in Billings, Mont., and worked at a Flying J truck stop for more than a year. He would stay with Wilson when he visited Las Vegas, Tucker said.

Authorities have not disclosed a motive for the slaying. But Tucker said Wilson appeared to believe that the face-slashing victim had become romantically involved with Philip Morris.

Wilson picked up Jade for their shopping expedition around 5 p.m. Later, she got a ride with a friend to the Bellagio. She allegedly attacked her co-worker, Joyce Rhone, at around 9:30 p.m.

Rhone, 44, was hospitalized with deep cuts on her face, including one from her ear to the edge of her mouth.

Wilson told investigators that she visited her doctor last week, seeking to be admitted to a hospital "due to feeling like she wanted to hurt someone."

New Year's Recipes | HGTV Gardens

new year's menu

You?ve probably heard that black-eyed peas are said to bring luck on New Year?s Day, but did you know that pork, greens and ring-shaped bread also promise good fortune? Here we?ve pulled together a menu of recipes for ringing in the New Year, all based on tradition and most featuring garden-fresh veggies, fruits and herbs:

  • Hoppin? John Salad.?Red bell peppers and fresh parsley accent this?traditional black-eyed pea dish to make 2013 lucky. Or mix those black-eyed peas with corn, peppers, onions and pimentos and serve up with corn chips in this Black-Eyed Pea Dip.
  • Cuban Roasted Pork Leg. Pork is another traditional New Year food that?s thought to represent good fortune. This recipe incorporates fresh oregano and a bright splash of citrus fruit.
  • Collard greens. The leaves of greens represent folded money ? and the promise of wealth in the year to come ? in New Year?s tradition. Paula Deen?s authentic Southern recipe makes good use of that leftover Christmas ham.
  • Three Kings Bread.?In Latin America, this New Year?s treat is traditionally served with a little doll, a coin, or another prize tucked inside. The circular nature of the bread represents wholeness or the completion of a year and the beginning of the next. ?This recipe is big on candied fruit, ?surprise inside? optional.

UN Envoy warns of mass death next year in Syria

The international envoy to Syria emphasized the deteriorating situation in the country, and called for a quick end to the conflict, warning hundreds of thousands could die next year.

A child watches men dig graves for future casualties of Syria's civil conflict at Sheikh Saeed cemetery in Azaz city, north of Aleppo December 30. The international peace envoy for Syria said the situation in the country was deteriorating sharply but a solution was still possible under the terms of a peace plan agreed in Geneva in June.

Lakhdar Brahimi, the U.N.-Arab League envoy for the Syrian crisis, told reporters in Cairo that if the crisis continues?Syria?will not be divided into states "like what happened in Yugoslavia" but will face "Somalization, which means warlords, and the Syrian people will be persecuted by those who control their fate."

Syrian rebels are fighting a 21-month-old revolt against President Bashar Assad's regime. Activists say more than 40,000 people have been killed in the crisis, which began with pro-democracy protests but has morphed into a civil war.

Since starting his job in September, Brahimi has sought to advance an international plan, reached in Geneva six months ago, that calls for an open-ended cease-fire between rebels and government troops and the formation of a transitional government to run the country until elections can be held.

Over the past week Brahimi went to Damascus where he met Assad then flew to Moscow, one of?Syria's?closest international allies, where he discussed ways of ending the country's crisis.

"The situation in?Syria?is bad. Very, very bad," Brahimi said after meeting Arab League chief Nabil Elaraby. "It is getting worse and therefore if nearly 50,000 were killed in nearly two years if, God forbids, this crisis continues for another year, it will not only kill 25,000. It will kill 100,000. The situation is deteriorating."

The monthly death toll in?Syria?rose over the past months, as both sides have used heavier weapons and as the Syrian army started using its warplanes to attack rebel-held areas around the country.

Brahimi said that peace and security in the world will be threatened directly from?Syria?if there is no solution within the next few months. "I warn of what will come. The choice is between a political solution or of full collapse of the Syrian state."

The Library as Lifeline: Getting Past Superstorm Sandy | American ...

By Queens Library staff members

How Queens Library is stepping up in the Rockaways

Posted Fri, 12/28/2012 - 15:46

Library workers know that public libraries provide essential services. We live it every day. Until Hurricane Sandy wreaked havoc on tens of thousands in New York and New Jersey in October, we at Queens Library didn?t realize how pivotal our role is in our communities.

As the extent of the damage became apparent, so did the obvious need for authoritative information. People did not know where to get a prescription filled when their pharmacy was destroyed, or how to apply for emergency benefits when they were without a phone or internet access. They were worried about their jobs and their children?s shuttered schools. Although four of our libraries were destroyed, Queens Library staff jumped into the breach and did what library staff does best: We gave out reference resources and created a sense of community, even though many of the staff were storm victims themselves.

Far Rockaway to the rescue

When Sharon Anderson, manager of Queens Library?s Far Rockaway branch, awoke the morning after Sandy struck [October 30] and found that her home without power or telecommunications, she shrugged. It was not unusual after a storm and she anticipated everything would be restored in a few hours. But the next day, things still had not improved. ?There were lines backed up at the few stores that were open, and they were double charging,? she recalls. ?Nobody had supplies. Nobody had anything.?

Sharon Anderson, manager of Queens Library's Far Rockaway branch, talks with NY1-TV reporter Suemyra Shah.So it wasn?t surprising that residents approached Anderson for help when she went out on November 1 in search of supplies for her family. She was a familiar face to members of the community not just from the library, but because she attended meetings at the local police community council and the church. ?People were asking, ?Where can we go? What are we going to do???

Anderson called Queens Library administrators from the barbershop, which happened to have one of the few working phones in the entire neighborhood, to say that she was opening the Far Rockaway facility even though there was no heat or light. ?And then?I just don?t know how?the word got out,? Anderson said. ?People just started coming to the library. People pulled up with truckloads of supplies. They wanted to help out but they did not want to leave the supplies in the street. They wanted to leave it somewhere where it would be distributed. We started that Sunday [November 4] putting stuff in order. Church groups and synagogues came from all over. The Seventh Day Adventist Church distributed 2,000 hot meals from here in three days. This was the hub, this was the place.?

The library gave out bottled water, diapers, food, batteries, sympathy, fellowship. New York Cares distributed thousands of warm coats, and the library offered information about how to apply for emergency benefits. The Far Rockaway branch had no power for two weeks and was forced to close daily once the daylight waned. But early the next morning for 13 consecutive days without a break, Anderson, her staff, and volunteers reopened. Every night, she returned to her dark and cold home. ?We felt we were better off being here than home, sitting in the dark. When I was here, I felt like I could help. I just didn?t think about anything else. When you see people who have lost everything, there is nothing in your mind but ?How can I help them???

The Far Rockaway branch continues to host some outpatient service by visiting nurses whose medical facility was destroyed by the storm. Anderson is also working with the Joseph Addabbo Family Health Centers, a longstanding partner with Queens Library and other community health providers, to do programs on disaster-related health issues such as post-traumatic stress order. In such difficult circumstances, another feature of the partnership is particularly helpful to residents of the Rockaways: Queens Library staff can make primary care and mental health services appointments for their customers.

?The people here have got a long way to go,? Anderson said. As for her, she was one of the lucky ones: Her home regained power after 12 days, and the water damage it sustained can be repaired. But she still cannot bear to turn off her lights at night. ?It?s like I?m afraid they will never come on again.?

Youth counselors pitch in

Stuart Davis is a 21-year-old youth counselor at the Far Rockaway branch?s Library for Teens (situated several blocks from the branch itself). He lives in the neighborhood but was visiting a friend in Jersey City when Sandy hit, and came home to discover ?about 4 feet of water in my house.? He estimates that he lost ?about 90% of my clothes and my furniture in my room.? In addition, he said, ?We had to take up the flooring in our house. We had no water, no heat, no electricity for about three weeks. It was pretty bad.?

After a few days, Stuart, who had no cellphone reception or computer access at his house, went to the Far Rockaway branch to get in contact with the outside world, as so many do after a natural disaster. When he discovered his colleagues had set up a relief effort, he joined right in. ?I said, ?Let me just do what I can for the people. My parents are at home doing what they can. These people out here really need our help and there?s no help out here.??

As his fellow Rockaways residents came in to receive the donated food, water, and cleaning supplies, Stuart began to hear their stories. ?There was one gentleman, who had his wife and I believe four kids,? Davis says. ?His home was pretty much demolished. He was sleeping in the train stations and had to take his family to work with him on the train.?

?I?m definitely proud to work for Queens Library,? he says. ?Especially in the hard times, you see how much help we give and how much we do for our students, and how much we do for the people in our community.? I would say we had 60%? 70% of our normal attendance almost immediately after the storm.?

Stuart Davis?s friend Conrad Davis (no relation) is also a youth counselor at the Library for Teens. Conrad and his family have lived in the same house in the Rockaways for more than a decade. Like so many others in the community, they were left without power for more than two weeks. Additionally, Sandy demolished all their vehicles, and felled several trees outside their home. Nonetheless, when Conrad heard that the Far Rockaway branch was being turned into a relief center, he went in immediately. ?It felt great to be a part of that,? he said. ?I almost forgot that I was one of the victims too. I would go home and look at the cabinets and say, ?Damn, I don?t have any food!??

Queens Library staffer Deborah Hanna wraps a holiday gift donated to Rockaways residents and distributed by the library. It will take more than a year for the Queens Library to rebuild at the Rockaways. In the meantime, Queens Library has established temporary outposts near the sites of the four library branches that Sandy destroyed, and the Far Rockaway branch and Mobile Library are offering seven-day-per-week service through the end of the year. As you?d expect, business is brisk.

?A library can operate in a modest building, but the community cannot operate without the library,? President and CEO Thomas Galante said in the December 21 New York Daily News.

How do CW feel about relative foster parents? - Adoption.com Forums

Hi there. I think I have already told you my story, but it's been awhile. I have done kinship foster care twice, with two different outcomes.

First case: Concurrent placement of a 2 1/2 year old precious little girl. She was taken due to a pretty serious domestic violence incident. Parents were alcoholic to the extent that they partied with homeless people. Bio mom was my cousin. No one thought the parents would be able to do it long term. Caseworker was sure the case would go to adoption. It didn't. Mom and Dad worked their butts off, got back custody at the six month mark and are still doing well to this day. It was difficult emotionally to change paths, but we did, and have a good relationship to this day with the family.

Second kinship case: straight foster situation of a toddler and 9 month old. Bio mom is the daughter of my first bio mom. The placement was only to be for 3 months, the blackout period for the residential rehab she selected. Mom had a meth addiction and was a teen parent. During the placement, bio mom did little things to extend the blackout period. When she finally was able to have the kids come live with her, at the 9 month mark, she had a breakdown and abandoned the children fleeing the rehab. She signed an identified surrender a couple of weeks later. We have adopted the children and have a good relationship with their mother. This whole situation took us, and the CW completely by surprise.

I found the CW to be overloaded, but well meaning. They tended to tell us what we wanted to hear at times, which irritated me. My adopted kids CW kept the fact that their mother was struggling emotionally with me and in fact up to the day she signed I thought they were going back. I felt that it didn't matter to them if we were to adopt, or not. I was treated the same no matter what. I really liked them, and they liked us, but that does not matter in the least whether a child stays or not. It matters if the parents follow through with their case plan. It does not look good for Happy Baby's mother. Remember, though, she could suprise you and do a turn around. This whole thing is a roller coaster! Good luck to you and Happy Baby!

Baby Youre Cold Inside 200x300A Night of Writing Improv Style

By Ivy Bateman

I have tendonitis. Whoop dee-do right? I?m sure a lot of writers do, but we soldier on because not even swollen andbordering on immobile hands will stop us from writing our prose. However, in the summer, when I wrote Baby, You?re Cold, my tendonitis was particularly bad. As well as a freelance writer, at the time, I was also a copywriter for a website company and between the fun writing and work writing I spent most of my waking hours workingaway atthe computer. In order to give my hands a break, when I was copywriting, I often used a program called ?Dragon Naturally Speaking?. It?s a voice recognition program and is wonderful. I just speak into a mic on a head set and Bob?s your Uncle, it puts my words on the screen.

Now, no matter how handy it was for work related writing, I was always hesitant to use this program for my book writing. What I write often tends to be fairly graphic sexually and I sometimes cringe at the content as I type it. When I tried to image saying these explicit words out loud?well my office walls will tell you that even alone, my face can turn various shades of red in a fit of embarrassment.

However, deadlines push you do things you didn?t know you were capable of! It was a Friday night, my book was due the next day around noon, I had 6OOO words to go and my hands were killing me. As a side note, I have a daughter and I sometimes find it awkward to write erotica while she?s at home. On the night in question my daughter had a friend over: double awkward.

So, to get back to it, my hands were killing me, the deadline was looming and I knew that I didn?t have the strength in my hands to type the last 6K. With a grimace and a heavy sigh, I got to work finishing my book using the Dragon Program.

Let?s just say it?s a good thing the microphone on the headset is very sensitive! While the girls played loudly down the hall, I whispered my saucy, storytelling nothings to my dear Dragon. It was an intense night because of the situation I was in and because I didn?t know whether I could write a good enough story if it was going from my head to my mouth to the screen. When I first started writing more seriously, I had to go from mybrain to a pen to paperto typing into the computer. It took me a while to hone creative paths that ran from my brain to my hands to the keyboard and into the computer. That accomplishment was freeing; it cut a step, but this was a miracle! To go from my brain to voice to computer was euphoric! I took acting in school and am a stickler for a script.Improv was a nightmare for me. My mind would go blank! I would just stand on the stage and stare at the other actors, waiting for inspiration to whack me on the side of the head. After I slipped on the head set and got ready to dictate my book, at first, speaking my book into the computer felt like improv only with writing on the side. But, eventually I got into the same groove I usually get into while typing a story. I felt as though the story already existed and I was just reciting the actions being played out in my head.

Now, when I write, I listen to my hands first before I put the ideas on the screen. If they say ?We?re good!? it?s a typing day. If they say ?Ow! For the love of?? then I fire up the Dragon and speak my deepest, spiciest thoughts into its waiting ears.

Blurb for Baby, You?re Cold Inside, By Ivy Bateman

Lily Sinclair isn?t in the Christmas spirit.

Successful, sexy and headstrong; being nice is too overrated when being naughty is so much more fun. However, there are those who believe that her cool interior stands in her way of true happiness. On the night when something a little bit colder than Lily takes her on a journey to her past, she goes along for the ride, but?

Will her guide show her just what it will take to melt her icy soul?

Excerpt from Baby, You?re Cold InsideBy Ivy Bateman

?

?Why?d you bring me here?? I gesture to the circle of trees.

?So you assume that I arranged this??

?Well, I don?t see any other magic, frost people around,? I say, trying to keep my sarcastic tone in check.

?Well, yes?it was me, but why aren?t you more shocked? A lot of people freak out when this kind of thing happens to them! I thought for sure that even you would be impressed to be taken back to a point in your past. But no, you?re just as full of attitude watching your past as you are in the present! The guys and I really thought we?d be able to break your hostile exterior.? He genuinely seems hurt, but it doesn?t faze me.

?The guys? What guys?? I put my hands on my hips and face him.

?Yes, the guys, well and some girls, my co-workers, we who work for St. Jude.?

?St. Jude.?

?Yes,? he says, his voice filled with pride

?The saint for hopeless cases??

?Exactly.?

Our banter is interrupted by a loud groan. We look over at Cory the rutting wonder and past Lily. I can tell Phillip assumes the noise came from Cory, but I remember it was me, expressing my sour mood. This guy had one move; put it in, pull it out and repeat. It got old fast.

I shake my head and look back at Phillip. ?They can?t see us, right??

?No, they can?t see us, or hear us, or anything like that. So getting back to St. Jude??

?Yes, ok?you work for the saint of hopeless causes, Phillip. I got that. So why are you here? Oh wait!? I put my hand up to stop him from talking. ?You and the guys think I am a hopeless case or cause or whatever! That?s a riot! Are you here to help me??

Frozen Phillip momentarily transitions into assistant Phillip. He looks down at his feet and scrunches his face. He appears embarrassed. I laugh loudly.

?You are! That?s insane! I don?t need any help!?

?Well, Lily, we disagree,? he starts speaking very slowly, as if he was talking to a child. ?We?ve been watching you for quite a few years. Your attitude toward your fellow man has been a bit?off kilter for more than a little while and we think it?s time to intervene. Most people who are not very nice eventually have an epiphany, a sort of a wakeup call and change their ways, but not you. You seem to thrive on making people miserable, but in the end it?s not going to help you.? Phillip stops and looks into my eyes. He?s probably trying to see if this is moving me at all. I stare blankly back at him, crossing my arms under my breasts.

?And?? I snap at him.

Phillip swallows before he continues. ?And every Christmas season, because at this time of the year people are often at their kindest, we are all given a ?hopeless case,? a person to turn around. This year I was given you as my project. I?ve been sent by the powers that be to help you find your kinder side. We think that somewhere under your cold exterior lies a warm heart, a gentler person and we?d like to bring that out in you.?

I howl with laughter. ?Wow, Phillip, do I feel sorry for you! How?d you get stuck with me? Did you draw the short straw?? I?m laughing so hard I?m in tears, but I stop soon after. The snow suit is too tight for a lot of mirth.

?Lily, I?m quite serious.?

?Oh I believe you, my dear. Don?t worry. The icy get up, the trip to the past, it?s all very dramatic, but come on, Phillip! Why on earth do you and your guys care about one bitchy woman? Besides, I don?t think I?m a hopeless case. I think I?m fabulous. You?re wasting your time. Aren?t there people who have seriously hopeless cases that you could be working on??

He smiles brightly. ?See right there! The fact that you can think of people other than yourself, that you can imagine there are suffering people who need help shows that you have a bit of warmth in your soul.?

I scoff at him. ?No it doesn?t. Phillip, I think most people are hopeless. If you helped people based on what I think, you?d never stop working. The only person I care about is me.? I pat his frozen cheek and walk over to watch the action in the center of the trees.

ONE FRAME FRIDAY

tree

the best?Christmas?gift of all is the presence of a happy family all wrapped up with one another.

so this one time we celebrated christmas with a poinsettia and a pine scented candle? yeah, we failed. we didn?t get a christmas tree this year, how unfortunate. seriously, i have zero good excuses and a million bad ones. life just sort of took over and before we knew it, december 26th was on the calendar and we had no pine needles to vacuum up. drew got overly?busy with wine season and the fact that we have two shiny new cars that aren?t equipped to travel a large needled object left us celebrating around a little pretty poinsettia. the ornaments are still in their box waiting to be hung, the lights sit in a pile in the office, and i am left feeling like a tad bit of a failure of a wife.?

i would love to blame it on the fact that our new little boy pup likes to think that christmas trees are a spot to mark his scent, or the fact that i was over the top busy getting things in line for 2013, or that drew doesn?t get home until it is dark out but let?s be real? enough people posted photos on facebook to make me feel like we had a lovely one, without all of the work. christmas really isn?t about chopping down a tree and covering it with tinsel and lights. it isn?t about pretty packages or glittered bows, or last minute shopping, or crazy wish lists. ?it?s about reflecting on the things you have and sharing your?blessings with those less fortunate. it is about stuffing your bellies full, taking naps, and sipping coffee with your grandma.?it?s about being where your heart is and celebrating the fact that a tiny baby was born in a stable. maybe if the wise men had really been so wise, they would have brought him blankets and not incense? it?s about celebrating this little life who changed the world by holding a lit candle and singing old hymns. ?

i have already forgotten all the gifts that i received, but what i do recall is far more important. it was worth every long hour in the car to be home with our families over the last five days. to fall asleep on the couch, sip some wine, play some board games, fill the house with family, and celebrate. we didn?t celebrate presents, we celebrated the gift of life. the joys, trials, triumphs, pains, small victories, promotions, dreams, growth? it was all celebrated oh so well, and that is the reason of the season. so mother nature, you can thank me for sparing one of your fir trees? our christmas was perfect even without following a silly tradition of a pretty tree with lights and tinsel and maybe a little dog pee.?

to share some holiday joy with you, i am offering 15% off of save the dates from wedding paper divas!?

Breast cancer cells interact with non-cancerous tissue to drive ...

In addition to mutations, environmental conditions created by the tissues surrounding tumors (stroma) play a major role in cancer progression. Researchers led by Gregg Semenza at Johns Hopkins University examined the interactions between breast cancer cells and the stroma to identify underlying pro-metastatic molecular mechanisms.

They found that both breast cancer cells and the stroma secrete proteins that influence the behavior of each cell type.

Additionally, Semenza and colleagues found that a group of proteins known as HIFs were required for stroma-driven metastases, suggesting that drugs which inhibit this class of proteins may be useful in preventing breast cancer metastasis.

Set Up and Get to Know Your New Android Phone

Set Up and Get to Know Your New Android PhoneSweet robotic joy?you just unwrapped an Android phone and, man, is it shiny. Here are our suggestions for apps to grab, settings to tweak, and really nifty things you can do with your Google-powered mini-supercomputer.

With luck, your shiny new Android phone is running Jelly Bean or at least Ice Cream Sandwich, so not a ton of updating should be required. If you're coming from an old Android phone, we have a guide specifically for you that will show you how to move all of your apps, settings, and data from your old phone to your new one. Still, there's nothing wrong with a fresh start with a brand new phone, so let's start from the beginning. Your awesome new Android phone is capable of a lot. Here's just a taste of what it can do:

Get the Latest and Greatest Google Stuff

Set Up and Get to Know Your New Android Phone Before you start playing around and getting used to how things work, why don't you do two quick things: Set up a Wi-Fi connection, then update your phone's built-in applications. There are likely newer versions available than the ones you have on your just-opened phone, so they're worth picking up.

To connect to Wi-Fi, hit your phone's Menu button (the button with either parallel lines, or the two boxes), choose System Settings from the menu that pops up, then under Wireless & Networks tap Wi-Fi. On the next screen, enable Wi-Fi and wait for the list of nearby networks to update. Pick out your home router name (or your relatives'), enter a password if necessary, and now have some fun.

Open the Play Store app from your list of applications (press the grid-like, bottom-middle on-screen button to get there if it's not on one of your home screens), then tap the Menu button and select "My Apps." The list should be separated, with apps you have updates for at the top. Tap "Update" to update them all at once. If you don't see updates for some of your apps, you may have to search them out to download the newer version.

  • Google Maps: Google Maps shines on Android. Seriously - in addition to offering you free turn-by-turn navigation, Google Maps can help you with walking directions, public transit to your destination, and it even offers maps and walking directions of indoor places like airports and museums so you can find your way around. You might also pick up some "splinter" apps, like Google Local.
  • Gmail: The ubiquitous mail app just picked up pinch to zoom, swipe to delete, and some other handy features not too long ago. Make sure to update to the newest version.
  • Voice Actions/Search or Google Now: Google Search for Android controls your phone with your voice, but can send SMS messages, navigate you to your destination, place calls, find nearby businesses, and more as you talk to it. If you're running Jelly Bean, you get the full benefit of Google Now, a full-on virtual assistant that responds to your voice, keeps an eye on when you should leave for your next appointment or go home to beat the traffic, helps you manage travel, and much more. If you have Ice Cream Sandwich, you can get it too with some work, but Search offers many of the voice features we love.
  • Google Chrome: Even though it's only available on Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean devices, Google Chrome sings on Android. It left beta earlier this year and is one of the best Android browsers available. If you use Chrome on the desktop, Chrome Sync is built-in, so open tabs, bookmarks, passwords, and history are all available everywhere, and most importantly, it's blazing fast.
  • Google+: We love Google+, and think it's great for a lot of things even if (and especially if) your friends may not be on it. The Android app just picked up a huge update for people who love sharing photos, checking into their favorite locations, and hanging out via Google Hangouts video chat. Once you're all signed up and set up, don't forget to add Lifehacker to your circles!
  • Google Play Music: If you're really going to live the Android life, Google Music is both a music store and a music locker with millions of tracks and label support, and tons of cloud storage for your uploaded songs and your purchased music, all for free, and all accessible on your Android phone. Google Play Music just picked up scan-and-match so you don't have to spend days uploading songs, and considering the app can play music in the cloud or on your phone, we think it's a good choice for a secondary media player.
  • Google Currents: Google's magazine-style newsreader looks great, hooks into Google Reader so you can read your favorite blogs, and offers featured and curated content in a variety of categories to help you stay up to date and share interesting reads with your friends. The app was just updated to make breaking news easier to find and more news categories easier to read.
  • Set up Google Voice(mail): If you're intrigued by Google Voice, Google's one-number service with free SMS and other perks, Android is where you should be. You can even port your number to Google Voice so no one calling you knows the difference. Still, even if you don't want to, you can use Google Voice as your voicemail provider and send texts through the web. Activate the Voice app on your phone, and it will take care of your phone's configuration. From then on, your voicemail will go to Google, where it'll be transcribed, archived, and managed like email on your phone. You can even read or listen to your voicemail on the web, mark telemarketers as spam, and set up multiple greetings for different people. If you're an SMS fanatic, the app has been supports group texting and voicemail pre-fetching, so no more getting a voicemail in Google Voice and only being notified on your Android phone hours later.
  • Get Google Drive: Drive, the new name for Google's combination of Google Docs and cloud storage space, is just as great on your Android device as it is on the desktop. Well, mostly anyway?the mobile app just picked up editing and presentation support, which makes it useful for quick file edits as well as just viewing documents you need to review on the go.

  • How to Get iOS 6's Best New Features in Android: If you're keeping tabs on all of the things iOS has to offer, never fear?for every feature in iOS 6, there's a way to get similar functionality in Android and then some, thanks to some great third-party apps.

Wo if you've still got a few holes after checking out the Pack and most popular, you're sure to find what you're looking for here.

Start Syncing Your Music, Videos, and Pictures

Set Up and Get to Know Your New Android Phone Your Android doesn't need a USB cable to play or sync music on your desktop computer?though it can work that way, if that's more your speed. But setting up Wi-Fi syncing and internet streaming for your Android is so simple, you might never need to cord-hunt again when you want to switch up your playlist.

  • Music Player Showdown: Which Desktop Player Is Best for Syncing to Android?: If you want to use your Android phone as a music player (and survey says you do) then you'll need a media player that rocks when it comes to syncing your music. If you don't want to use Google Music (or can't, since it's US-only), Whitson has some options for you.
  • How to Sync Android with Windows as Seamlessly as an iPhone: Speaking of easy, Whitson walked us through the process of syncing our Android phones with your Windows systems quickly and easily in a way that's repeatable without a ton of hassle.
  • Upgrade Your Smartphone's Music and Podcast Abilities This Weekend: While it's not Android-only, this guide to beefing up your smartphone's media capabilities will get you rocking out and listening to your favorite podcasts on your device in no time.
  • How Can I Get an iTunes-Like Experience For My Android Phone?: If you're coming to Android from an iPod, iPod Touch, or iPhone, you may be wishing there were a way to just plug-in your Android device and sync all of your media, music, and podcasts. Thankfully, there are plenty of ways to do it, and we're happy to show you how.
  • How to Set Up Your Android for Automated Wi-Fi Syncing with DoubleTwist: When this is set up-and, really, it only takes about 15 minutes, much less if you've already connected AirSync-you'll have a computer and phone that "check in" with each other regularly over Wi-Fi. No cables needed, and you don't have to click the Sync button.
  • Winamp for Android Updates, Now Syncs with Macs Wirelessly: If DoubleTwist isn't right for you, try Winamp for Android?it syncs with Macs and Windows PCs over USB or wirelessly, syncs iTunes playlists, and is overall and excellent music player for Android. We've mentioned it before, and it still whips the llama's a**.

Troubleshoot the Tricky Stuff

Set Up and Get to Know Your New Android Phone Your Android phone is a great device, and Android as a mobile OS is much more mature and polished now than it used to be. Still, there are times where you need to troubleshoot problems and fix issues you'll run up against. Here are some tips. Photo by Sylvain Naudin.

  • How to Upgrade to a New Android Phone and Take Everything With You: If your new Android device is a replacement for an old one, taking your data with you is easy. We show you how.
  • How to Set Up a Fully Automated App and Settings Backup on Android: Once you get your Android device all set up and to your liking, don't let tragedy happen to you. Make sure you make sure your phone is regularly backed up so you don't have to worry about your data. Your Android phone is a mini-computer that has a lot of precious information on it, and keeping it safe is easy and takes only a few minutes to set up.
  • How to Speed Up, Clean Up, and Revive Your Android Phone: After installing a bunch of apps and games, your phone might slow down a good bit. Never fear, cleaning it up and getting back the speed you need is easier than you think.
  • How Can I Fix My Android's Crappy GPS: Turn-by-turn navigation and Google Maps are great...when they don't take forever to initialize and pinpoint your position. Here's how to fix that little annoyance, once and for all.
  • Use Android's ?Safe Mode' to Disable Apps and Troubleshoot Problems: Apps giving you trouble? Installed or uninstalled something and now your phone is slow as molasses? Android's built-in "safe mode" may be able to help.
  • How Do I Fix My Bricked Android Phone?: One of the first things many of you may do with a brand new Android phone is root it and possibly install a new ROM. If that process doesn't go very well and you wind up with a brand new hunk of plastic and metal on your desk that's completely unresponsive, all may not be lost! There are plenty of ways to approach a so-called "bricked" phone that may bring it back to life.
  • The Best Data Usage Tracker for Android: Just as many smartphones added tethering support and enough great features that we wanted to use the hell out of our data plans, most carriers are killing unlimited plans and serving up overage fees for breaking your bandwidth caps. If you have Ice Cream Sandwich or Jelly Bean, you have tools built-in to keep an eye on your bandwidth usage, but if you want a per-app breakdown and some more tools, try this app.
  • How Do I Convert Video for my Android Phone?: Converting videos for the iPod is so easy in iTunes, but I can't seem to get videos to play on my Android device. How can I convert videos so that they'll play in the native Android video player?
  • Android Task Killers Explained: What They Do and Why You Shouldn't Use Them: Android task killers improve your phone's performance while also boosting battery life-or at least that's the much-debated promise. Here's a look at how task killers actually work, when you should (or shouldn't) use them, and what you can do instead.

Expand Your Phone's Capabilities

Set Up and Get to Know Your New Android Phone Beyond apps and tweaks, you can make your phone do some really neat things. Things like tell you where it is if it's lost or stolen. Things like play any song or video you happen to have on a nearby TV. Things like send a text back to your wife to let her know you're driving, not just callously ignoring her calls.

  • The Always Up-To-Date Guide to Rooting Any Android Phone: We recently updated our Android rooting guide to include lots of ICS and Jelly Bean-friendly options and tools for newer devices on the market now. One of the best things you can do to extend the functionality of your Android device is root it, and we're happy to show you how.
  • Five Best Android Launchers: One way to extend the features of your phone just by installing an app is to grab a new Android launcher. It'll completely change the way you interact with your phone, and in many cases it's free, can actually add features you didn't have in the first place, and offer you more customization options. Here are five great ones to choose from.
