Why regular exercise advice needs to #trend in social media and in ...

Obesity, diabetes, many cancers, and heart disease are lifestyle diseases that claim 36 million lives globally and cost economies billions of dollars.

36 million is a BIG number. Someone said to me recently, that it was too big a number for the world to 'care.' I was shocked to say the least at this comment. At any one time in the UK alone, as many as 17.5 million adults may be living with a chronic lifestyle disease.?But it got me thinking..

  • ?Why are there no faces and 'lives' to that 36 million that people CAN relate to? And more importantly, why aren't all health and fitness professionals helping to direct patients routinely to more active, healthier lives.
  • What if a member of our family or loved one was a number in that 36 million?
  • What if, as a health professional, YOU?had the abilities to make a difference to the lifestyle advice you gave to a patient that could help prevent and treat those lifestyle diseases?

Health and fitness professionals such as doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, pharmacists, allied health professionals, personal trainers, and fitness experts ALL have the skills to make a difference to these 36 million PEOPLE. Exercise advice and support, given to every patient, every consultation is giving a patient the medical direction that we do routinely as part of clinical practice to improve their health.

Regular exercise and great physical activity opportunities as familes, communities, towns, cities and nations NEEDs to start #trending!

Here are some trend FACTS that health professionals, the NHS, large health organisations and health charities need to know and take action on as part of their everyday clinical practice with patients:

The UK women are the fattest in Europe: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-15901351?

Living with a lifestyle disease results in multiple drug therapy, multiple primary care consultations, multiple hospital visitis, pain, suffering, sometimes disabilities, carer fatigue, job loss, and can affect families and communities:?

Face to face with long term lifestyle diseases is real and a threat to the health of people not only in the UK but globally. They are part of families and communities that need the best in evidence based medical care: http://www.who.int/chp/chronic_disease_report/full_report.pdf

80% of women would rather be dead than experience loss of independence and quality of life that results from a hip fracture and admission to a nursing home (Salkeld et al BMJ 2000) ....

Don't let patients become just numbers in the pandemic of lifestyle diseases.

36 million people dying from preventable and treatable diseases CANNOT be just a number.

People with long term health conditions deserve the best access to medical care and exercise advice and support.

Get regular exercise advice trending in your clinical practice, in your clinical teams, in your health organisation.

Help patients to #getactive and feel healthier!

The UK, USA, Canada, Australia, India, China, Africa, Russia, Europe, Latin Americas are all facing the biggest health threat to their people from lifestyle or non communicable diseases (NCDs).

As health professionals please give exercise advice to every patient:

Brief exercise intervention is:?'I have prescribed/referred/advised this action to help you control your [insert chronic disease condition]. The best medical evidence has shown that exercising for 30 minutes a day will help you control your [insert chronic disease condition] and may help minimise the need for medications. Regular exercise is fun- it is also a great medicine!?Here is an Exercise Works! booklet that includes some exercises that you can try at home. It also provides information on how to exercise safely and effectively! When I see you next time, we can discuss how the regular exercise has benefited your health. This is like me reviewing how your medicines have worked. Try and get 30 minutes of fun stamina/aerobic exercise, on at least 5 days a week. Include strength, flexibility and balance exercises twice a week.'

Show patients this video:

Its not rocket science. It works! It helps patients 'concord' with their health professional to make a positive lifestyle change. See regular exercise as a 'vital sign' for your patient and as part of your routine clinical advice.
