Mahela Jayawardene: This is definitely the biggest game we have staged ? Cricket News Update

Sri Lankan skipper Mahela Jayawardene is confident they could win their first global title since the 1996 triumph in the ODI World Cup, as they gear up to face off resurgent West Indies?in the ICC World T20 final here at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, on Sunday, October 7, 2012.

Sri Lanka have not won a major title since clinching the 50-overs World Cup trophy back in 1996, despite reaching the semi-finals and finals at various occasions. The Islanders made the final of two successive ODI World Cups, in 2007 and 2011, and were also the losing finalists of the 2009 ICC World T20 Championship, in England.

"This is definitely the biggest game we have staged," captain Jayawardene said. "It's been a great couple of weeks for the entire country.?

"The expectations from our fans are the same as they were at the start of the tournament. They wanted us to reach the final even then. And we must now win it for them."?

Jayawardene, who was part of all the three squads that lost the ODI and T20 finals over the last five years, was confident of losing the jinx this time around.

"Now we are playing in the Premadasa, so we will approach it differently. We have to adapt. It is all about handling tough situations better," said the top-order batsman who was appointed as Sri Lanka skipper for a second term earlier this year.?

Sri Lanka defeated Pakistan to qualify for Sunday?s grand finale. The classy Islanders are the most consistent side of the latest edition of the T20 showdown. They have lost only one of their six outings so far in the tournament. Their only defeat in the global event was a 32-run thrashing at the hands of South Africa in a rain curtailed Group C match, which was reduced to seven overs a side, due to heavy showers in Hambantota.

Jayawardene led Sri Lankan outfit has defeated the Caribbean contingent twice in recent times - a nine-wicket win in a warm-up game before the tournament, and again by the same margin in the Super Eights stage last week - and will be oozing with confidence going into Sunday?s grand finale.
