NBC Sets Premiere Dates for "1600 Penn," Eva Longoria Series

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - NBC announced midseason premiere dates Tuesday for three new series, including the Bill Pullman presidential comedy "1600 Penn" and the new Eva Longoria relationship series "Ready for Love."

The network also announced the premiere date for the drama "Deception," which was formerly known as "Infamous."

In addition to the series premieres, the network announced return dates for several shows, including the on-the-bubble comedy "Community," which will return to its previous Thursday night timeslot.

"Deception," a dark family mystery starring Meagan Good and Victor Garber, premieres on Monday, January 7 at 10 p.m. It will follow "The Biggest Loser," which starts its new season with a two-night premiere on January 6 and 7.

"1600 Penn," starring Bill Pullman as the president in a comedy about the First Family, premieres Thursday, January 10 at 9:30. The series, which also stars Jenna Elfman and Josh Gad, was co-created by "Modern Family" director Jason Winer. It will join a slightly altered Thursday lineup.

"Parks and Recreation" moves to 8:30 on January 17, and "Community," returns to 8 p.m. on February 7.

"Ready for Love," a reality show executive produced by former "Desperate Housewives" star Eva Longoria, will premiere Sunday, March 31 at 8 p.m.

New findings on men's genes could alter interpretation of PSA test

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? By studying a specific part of the male DNA, it may be possible to refine the interpretation of PSA tests. This would reduce the risk of men being treated for prostate cancer unnecessarily.

The findings have been presented in a thesis by Christel Bj?rk at Lund University, Sweden, who has carried out the study with her colleague Hannah Nenonen, supervised by researcher Yvonne Lundberg Giwercman.

A PSA test measures the level of PSA (prostate-specific antigen) in the blood, and raised PSA can signal an increased risk of cancer; however, this is not the case for everyone. The problem is that there is no good way to separate those with naturally high levels of PSA from those at increased risk of prostate cancer.

"If we know that a man has a naturally high level of PSA, this can be taken into account in a PSA test, and the patient may be able to avoid arduous treatment with a risk of side-effects," says Christel Bj?rk, a doctoral student at the Department of Clinical Sciences, Lund University.

The present study shows how a man's genetic characteristics can affect the androgen receptor, a protein that has an important function in the male reproductive system. It regulates the effect of testosterone and controls production of prostate-specific antigen.

The researchers studied healthy men in different age groups and discovered a connection between PSA levels in the blood and DNA structure of the androgen receptor. The highest PSA levels were found in the men with the most common variant of the androgen receptor, i.e. the largest group of men.

"Both the PSA level and the genetic characteristics can be identified with a blood test," says Yvonne Lundberg Giwercman, Associate Professor at the Department of Clinical Sciences, Lund University.

The study is based on samples from around 400 men from Sweden and Norway. Before the results can be implemented for PSA tests in the health service, the study must be repeated on a larger group.

"We have access to material covering around 3 200 men from seven European countries and the idea is to investigate whether our preliminary findings can be verified on this group in the near future," explains Yvonne Lundberg Giwercman.

Singapore firm starts new Alzheimer's drug trials

LONDON (Reuters) - TauRx Therapeutics, a privately held biotech company based in Singapore, has launched two late-stage clinical studies testing a new kind of experimental drug against Alzheimer's.

Its LMTX drug aims to attack the memory-robbing disease by blocking the build-up of a protein called tau that forms twisted fibers and tangles inside brain cells.

Many scientists believe tau is an important cause of Alzheimer's, alongside another protein known as amyloid that has been the main focus of drug development efforts to date.

Several large pharmaceutical companies are looking at tau-targeted drugs, including Switzerland's Roche, which in June bought the rights to a tau treatment from another private biotech firm, AC Immune of Lausanne.

TauRx said on Tuesday that one Phase III study of LMTX would involve 833 people with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease tracked over 12 months, while the second would include 500 people with mild disease studied over 18 months.

The trials have already starting enrolling in the United States. They will also recruit patients in Europe and Asia.

The decision to move into Phase III testing - the last stage before a drug is approved for use - follows encouraging Phase II studies with a related product called rember. LMTX delivers the same active substance into the bloodstream as rember but in a more efficient manner, the company said.

The start of the latest tests was announced at the Clinical Trials Conference on Alzheimer's Disease in Monaco, where scientists have also been poring over findings with Eli Lilly's drug solanezumab.

The Lilly medicine, targeting amyloid, failed to significantly arrest progression of Alzheimer's in two Phase III studies, results of which were reported in August, but further analysis suggests amyloid was removed from the brain as intended.

Starting this weekend, it?s possible again as the Statue of Liberty crown reopens to the public on Sunday after a year of renovations. Visitors seeking magnificent vistas of the Big Apple and a glimpse of the famous monument?s inner workings are already snapping up tickets online.

?It?s an experience that stays with you for your entire lifetime,? said Chris Heywood, a spokesman for New York City?s official tourism agency NYC & Company, who still remembers making the climb as a child.

?The Statue of Liberty remains one of the city?s most iconic attractions and there certainly will be a pent up demand for visitors to want to go up and see the crown.?

The renovations promise better access and safer conditions. There are two new staircases, a new elevator inside the pedestal and a lift that will take visitors who are mobility impaired higher into the monument than ever before, said Mindi Rambo, a spokeswoman for the National Parks of New York Harbor.

?For the first time, people in wheelchairs will be able to go up to the top of the pedestal and actually see into the statue, whereas before, the highest level that they ever really got to was the museum level,? Rambo said.

?The lift is brand new, we?ve never had that before and we?re very excited about it.?

There is no elevator service from Lady Liberty?s feet to her head, so visitors must still go up a double spiral staircase to reach the crown. Official pamphlets warn it?s a strenuous journey, but Heywood recalled that it feels short ?when you?re looking forward to a view that?s stunning.?

It takes adults up to 20 minutes to make the climb depending on whether they stop to examine the statue?s inner architecture and copper skin, Rambo said.

?You can see the folds of the robe, the interior of the statue, and many people find that fascinating. They stop to take photos and point things out to their kids like, ?Oh, that looks like the back of her heel,?? Rambo said.

Once at the top, only 10 adults can fit inside the crown, a space that?s much smaller than people expect, Rambo added. Visitors often tell park rangers that they have come because they remember making the trip as a child and want their kids to have the same experience.

?I think part of that is just driven by the ability to say that they have made that climb and to look out into the harbor and, I suppose in a way, to look back in time to when people came on the big steam ships,? Rambo said.

The crown will be open each week from Thursday through Sunday. If you?d like to visit, you must make a reservation through Statue Cruises ? the monument?s ferry transportation provider.

Tickets became available on October 1 and sales have been brisk: just a few dates in December remain available for 2012.

This is the second time in recent years that the National Park Service is reopening the statue?s crown. The attraction was closed after the 9/11 attacks for security reasons and then reopened on July 4, 2009.

The chance to make the climb will give travelers just one more reason to visit New York, which is on track to set another record year for tourism, Heywood said.

Sunday?s crown reopening also coincides with the 126th anniversary of the statue?s dedication.

Google has sent out invites for an event in New York on Oct. 29, as rumors last week suggested. If other recent rumors hold true, Google may unveil new Nexus hardware, possibly both a tablet and a phone.

There are conflicting reports on the new Nexus phone, which was first rumored to feature a large 4.7-inch screen. But leaked images referred to a "Nexus 4" device, which would have a 4-inch screen if it follows the same naming convention as the Nexus 7 tablet. Either way, word is that it is made by LG, and may share some DNA with LG's jumbo-sized Optimus G.

As for the tablet, there are rumors both of a price drop for the Nexus 7 and a new, high-end model, possibly the Nexus 10. The Nexus 7, now $199 for the 32GB version, may be dropping to $99, though Google would certainly lose money on every sale if that were to happen.

The new larger device is said to feature a screen that is even more high-resolution than the third-generatio?iPad: 2,560-by-1,600 pixels, compared with the iPad's 2,048-by-1,536. Such a sharp screen would be a powerful selling point against the iPad, just as the iPad's sharp screen has been a selling point for Apple.

There have also been rumblings of a new version of Android, 4.2, which would feature security improvements among other new features.

Apple is planning?an event a week earlier, on the 23rd (we'll be there and reporting live). It is widely expected to be the launch of a smaller "iPad Mini," and possibly a 13-inch Retina?MacBook Pro.

And on top of that, it's the same week Microsoft is launching Windows 8 and its Surface RT tablet ? and a dozen or two other tablets and laptops are being announced?as well.

All in all,?it's going to be a big week for PCs and tablets. If you're in the market, it would be wise to wait until the end of the month before making any purchases.

Uncle Sam gives retired workers a 1.7% raise

More than 56 million Social Security recipients will see their monthly payments go up by 1.7 percent next year.

The increase, which starts in January, is tied to a measure of inflation released Tuesday. It shows that inflation has been relatively low over the past year, despite the recent surge in gas prices, resulting in one of the smallest increases in Social Security payments since automatic adjustments were adopted in 1975.

Social Security payments for retired workers average $1,237 a month, or about $14,800 a year. A 1.7 percent increase will amount to about $21 a month, or $252 a year, on average.

Social Security recipients received a 3.6 percent increase in benefits this year after getting none the previous two years.

About 8 million people who receive Supplemental Security Income will also receive the cost-of-living adjustment, or COLA, meaning the announcement will affect about 1 in 5 U.S. residents.

Social Security also provides benefits to millions of disabled workers, spouses, widows, widowers and children.

"The annual COLA is critically important to the financial security of the (56) million Americans receiving Social Security benefits today," said Nancy LeaMond, AARP's executive vice president. "Amid rising costs for food, utilities and health care and continued economic uncertainty, the COLA helps millions of older Americans maintain their standard of living, keeping many out of poverty."

The amount of wages subjected to Social Security taxes is going up, too. Social Security is supported by a 12.4 percent tax on wages up to $110,100. That threshold will increase to $113,700 next year, resulting in higher taxes for nearly 10 million workers and their employers, according to the Social Security Administration.

Half the tax is paid by workers and the other half is paid by employers. Congress and President Barack Obama reduced the share paid by workers from 6.2 percent to 4.2 percent for 2011 and 2012. The temporary cut, however, is due to expire at the end of the year.

Higher Medicare premiums
Some of next year's COLA could be wiped out by higher Medicare premiums, which are deducted from Social Security payments. The Medicare Part B premium, which covers doctor visits, is expected to rise by about $7 per month for 2013, according to government projections.

The premium is currently $99.90 a month for most seniors. Medicare is expected to announce the premium for 2013 in the coming weeks.

"If seniors are getting a low COLA, much of their increase will go to pay off their Medicare Part B premium," said Mary Johnson, a policy analyst at The Senior Citizens League.

AARP agreed, saying that with health care and prescription costs rising faster than inflation, retirees are struggling to make ends meet.

By law, the increase in benefits is based on the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers, or CPI-W, a broad measure of consumer prices generated by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. It measures price changes for food, housing, clothing, transportation, energy, medical care, recreation and education.

Over the past year, housing costs have gone up 1.4 percent but home energy costs have dropped by 3.8 percent, according to the CPI-W. Medical costs, which tend to hit seniors harder than younger adults, have increased by 4.4 percent.

Gasoline prices have gone up by 6.8 percent, but much of that increase happened in the past month, so it is not fully reflected in the COLA for Social Security.

To calculate the COLA, the Social Security Administration compares the average price index for July, August and September with the price index for the same three months in the previous year. The price index for September ? the final piece of the puzzle ? was released Tuesday.

If consumer prices increase from year to year, Social Security recipients automatically get higher payments, starting the following January. If prices drop, the payments stay the same, as they did in 2010 and 2011.

Since 1975, the annual COLA has averaged 4.2 percent. Only five times has it been below 2 percent, including the two times it was zero. Before 1975, it took an act of Congress to increase Social Security payments.

Most older Americans rely on Social Security for a majority of their incomes, according to the Social Security Administration. Over the past decade, the COLA has helped increase incomes for seniors, even as incomes have dropped for younger workers.

From 2001 to 2011, the median income for all U.S. households fell by 6.6 percent, when inflation was taken into account, according to census data. But the median income for households headed by someone 65 or older rose by 13 percent.

Stephen Fleming, the former New Zealand skipper and currently the Chennai Super Kings coach, has confirmed that he has no intentions of coaching at the international level.

NEW YORK (AP) ? The Craigslist ad offered black-market Percocet pills for sale but warned potential customers: "No LE please." Meaning: No law enforcement.

The 40-year-old man accused of placing the ad was among 21 people arrested in an attempt by the New York Police Department to make an example out of some of the smallest of small-time drug dealers: students, young professionals and others who clean out the medicine cabinet and then are brazen enough ? and foolish enough ? to offer the pills for up to $20 a pop over the Internet.

"Whether the drug deal occurs on the street corner or on the Internet, it's a crime," Bridget Brennan, special narcotics prosecutor for New York City, said Thursday in a statement announcing the arrests.

Undercover narcotics investigators answered the ads and ended up buying handfuls of powerful prescription painkillers and other pills for a few hundred dollars, typically in broad daylight and in public settings such as coffee shops, Penn Station or Washington Square Park in Greenwich Village.

Some of the sellers turned out to be run-of-the mill drug dealers also peddling cocaine and heroin, police said. But many were more mainstream: Among those arrested were a New York University graduate student, a financial adviser and a 62-year-old woman who works as a freelance photographer.

The pills came from the sellers' own meds or were stolen from relatives, friends and co-workers, authorities said. Some of the dealers were out to make a quick buck ? even though their backgrounds would suggest they didn't need the money.

The arrests come as law enforcement agencies around the country battle a surge in illegal sales of highly addictive painkillers like Percocet and Roxycodone and, increasingly, attention-deficit drugs like Adderall ? transactions that now rival the cocaine and heroin trade both in volume and as a public health hazard.

Because the drugs have legal medical uses, they carry less of a stigma than illegal narcotics. After they were arrested, some of the sellers claimed they didn't know what they were doing was a crime. But investigators don't buy it.

"You'd have to be living under a rock to not know it's illegal," Brennan said.

Brennan's office reached out to San Francisco-based Craigslist earlier this week to try to get its cooperation in finding ways to discourage the Internet marketing. A Craigslist spokeswoman had no comment Thursday.

The undercover investigators began answering Craigslist ads late last year. By the time they were done, they had made 63 buys ? about $19,000 in pills and $10,400 in cocaine.

One ad was placed by a self-described "friendly NYU student." It offered "pain and anxiety relief." Just in case there was any confusion, it signed off with "perc roxy." And a smiley face.

A criminal complaint accused Anthony Vargas ? the Manhattan man who politely asked police not to respond to his ad ? of meeting the same undercover officer four times over the summer near Union Square to sell dozens of oxycodone pills. Vargas, 40, was sentenced to nine months in jail on Wednesday after pleading guilty to criminal sale of a controlled substance, prosecutors said.

Despite the enforcement effort, the advertising continued unabated on Thursday.

One posting from someone in New York City read: "Hello ladies and gentleman. If your in pain and need assistance look no further. I've got 30 (mg) ways to help!! ... Not affiliated with any sort of law enforcement? If ALL of these pertain to you, email me with what your looking for (quantity) and we will work it out."
