CES 2013: Incipio Unveils The Atlas Waterproof Ultra-Rugged Case For iPhone 5

20130110-201601.jpgCES 2013 has seen the birth of many new products, most of them seem to be based around some sort of charging solution, including all the manufacturers that are ticked off at how Apple is handling the licensing of their Lightning connector. But no matter how many products are brought to light this time of year, iPhone cases will still steal some of the spotlight. One of the companies that really stepped up was Incipio, with the announcement of their new OffGRID Line as well as their new rugged and waterproof case, the Atlas.

Waterproof and ultra-rugged cases are a dime a dozen. Some companies do it well, but the one thing they don?t take into consideration is that some people want their iPhones to remain slim, especially with the release of the iPhone 5. LifeProof has done a great job at marketing to these people with their line for all iPhones and iPads. The one thing they don?t do is offer a warranty in the rare instance their case fails. The one thing we count on as consumers is that we buy a case and put our $200+ purchase in their hands, so if you say it is waterproof and it ends up ruining my device, I?m out of luck.

Well, Incipio decided they are going to put 100% trust in their product when releasing this ATLAS case. Announced just the other day, the ATLAS case will launch next month at stores nationwide and online. It includes all of the proof labels ? waterproof, dustproof, drop and shockproof. But what it carries over every other case in it?s class is a water damage warranty. Yes, you heard that right, Incipio knows their case will protect your iPhone 5 from the dangers of that wet mistress.

The ATLAS was precision engineered with a co-modled Plextonium ergonomic space frame design, impact resistant Flex20 soft shell detailing and complete waterproof enclosures. The ATLAS is just as slim as the LifeProof case, but offering even more access to your ports than LifeProof gives. Something I really liked about the ATLAS during my hands on was the fact that the bottom just slid open to give you easy access to the headphone jack, LifeProof requires an unscrewing of a little nubbin, something I?ve always found annoying. The ATLAS also has a tempered glass cover that provides optical clarity and protection against harsh conditions and your rough outdoor activities and environments. The side was also designed with added grip, but it remains slim and sleek.

The ATLAS is only waterproof up to 2 meters, which is about 3 feet less than LifeProof, but it is good in those 2 meters for about an hour. It meets USA Military standards of protection, and has a full IP-68 rating against water and dust.

20130110-201729.jpgThe biggest part about this release isn?t the fact that Incipio has decided to move past their already line of drop and water resistant cases, but has decided to not only offer a waterproof case, but that it gives ? and the first I?ve seen to do this ? a device warranty. There are a few stipulations, although none too daunting, just purchase the case from an authorized dealer, which would be an AT&T Store, as well as a Verizon Store, and when you get the case you?ll open an app they give you which allows you to register the device. Once registered, your iPhone will be covered against any water damage that might occur. If you submerge your iPhone within the parameters listed and you get see water damage, you?ll be able to utilize Incipio?s amazing customer service to have your device swapped out. We were told it could take up to a couple weeks to receive the new device. You can then run out and purchase a new case, and then you can register your new device with that case.

The device warranty lasts 1 year from the purchase date, but you have the option to renew for only $39.99. We were told that a renewal will be for 2 years, and they weren?t 100% clear on if it is $40 per year or that price for the entire renewal period. We?ll update once they know more how that will work.

The ATLAS will launch in February and will retail for $89.99, which includes that one year limited warranty. And I must stress that it is limited, they will only cover against water damage. If you happen to punt your iPhone across the room and it cracks, they will not replace it for that. So stick within their submerged safe zone and that is what will be covered.

We should be receiving a review unit soon and will definitely update you on how it works. Once the device goes live, we?ll be able to register our device, so we?ll put it through the ringer and let you know how it it works!

This wasn?t the only thing that Incipio unveiled this year, we are really excited about the OffGRID line that we mentioned above, and we have that link for you as well.
